Steel Pipe Glossary

Terms used on this site, explained in plain language, without adding any specification to any term.

Pipe line terms

ERW steel pipe means pipe formed from flat steel and welded along its length by electric resistance welding, as the line name describes. SSAW steel pipe means pipe formed in a spiral and welded by a submerged arc route, as the line name describes. LSAW steel pipe means pipe welded along its length by a submerged arc route, as the line name describes. Seamless steel pipe means pipe formed without a welded seam, as the line name describes. Those four explanations name forming routes only, and none of them states a wall thickness, material grade, execution standard or length for any pipe.

Scaffolding tube and couplers means tubes that form a temporary access and support structure together with couplers that join the tubes, as the line name describes. Square hollow sections means hollow structural members with square cross-sections, and rectangular hollow sections means hollow structural members with rectangular cross-sections, as the line name describes. The company pages also name those shapes as SHS and RHS. None of those explanations states a size, a specification or a quantity figure for any tube, coupler or section. A buyer who needs a size or type must name it in the enquiry.

Direction and column terms

Petroleum and gas pipelines, water pipelines, construction and building, dredging projects and piling projects are the five application directions named on the company About page, and each has an application page on this site. Oil and gas line pipe, structure pipe and casing and tubing are homepage column names discussed on guide pages, not separate product lines on this site. A buyer who uses any of those column names in an enquiry should name the line wanted together with the direction, because the direction alone does not identify a line, and the guide pages explain that boundary in full for each direction.

A direction term and a line term together still do not identify an order. An enquiry that names a direction and a line must also name the size wanted where a size is known, the quantities, the destination and any date by which the items are needed, so that the commercial points can be answered for the items named. The enquiry checklist page collects those further terms in order, and the application and guide pages return to them at every step, because they are the terms that turn a direction and a line into a job that can be answered.

Size and quantity terms

Outside diameter, abbreviated OD on the line pages, is the size term used where the company About page gives a size range for a line. The ranges given are ERW at OD 1/2 to 26 inch (21.3 to 660 mm), SSAW at OD 8 to 120 inch (219.1 to 3048 mm), LSAW at OD 14 to 64 inch (219.1 to 1626 mm), and seamless at OD 1/8 to 36 inch (10.3 to 914.4 mm). Scaffolding tube and couplers and hollow sections carry no size range on the About page, and no range is stated for them anywhere on this site. A size range is a starting point for an enquiry, not a guarantee that every size inside the range is available for any particular order.

Quantity terms, timing, trade terms and payment method are commercial terms that depend on the items, the quantities and the destination, and they are settled in the enquiry rather than on any catalogue page. No quantity, timing, price or payment figure is stated anywhere on this site, and no buyer should read any catalogue wording as stating one. An enquiry that asks about those terms together, for the same items, in the same message, will receive a reply that can be checked as a whole, and that is the outcome the enquiry pages are written to support.

Document and enquiry terms

Certificates available upon request is the only document wording used on this site. It appears on the certificates page, on the homepage summary block, and in the template paragraph at the foot of every page. No page names a particular certificate, and no page states that any line carries any particular document. A buyer who needs a document should ask about it in the enquiry, naming the items it concerns, so that the answer can be tied to those items.

An enquiry is a message sent through the enquiry form, naming the line, the application, the size where known, the quantities, the destination and any date by which the items are needed, and asking for quantity terms, timing, trade terms, payment method and documents to be confirmed together for the items named. A catalogue page narrows the choice, and an enquiry settles the order, and that division is kept on every page of this site. A buyer who follows the enquiry checklist page before writing will send a message that can be answered directly, and that is the outcome this glossary, like every guide on this site, is written to support.

Certificates available upon request. Please confirm the minimum order quantity in your inquiry before placing an order. Please confirm the lead time with the supplier before placing an order. Please confirm the trade terms and payment method before confirming an order.
